10 Largest US Newspapers that Allow Reader Commenting on Top Stories

21Nov07

Last March, NYU journalism professor, Jay Rosen and his students analyzed “The State of Blogging at America’s Top 100 Biggest Newspapers.” You can see their findings as well as links and data on top newspaper-run blogs here.

I thought I would follow up with this and see how many of the top 10 papers currently allow reader commenting on the top news stories of the day. Here’s what I found:

1. USA Today– Reader comments allowed and showcased on homepage in prominent location

2. WSJ– Not found but check out what Dow Jones is doing with its Market Watch Community site

3. New York Times– I found commenting space in a few stories and in the Opinion features

4. Los Angeles Times– Open commenting space is available on major news stories

5. The Washington Post– Open commenting space is available on major news stories

6. The Daily News (NY)– Open commenting space is available on major news stories

7. New York Post– Comment space not found

8. The Chicago Tribune – Open commenting space is available on major news stories

9. Houston Chronicle– Open commenting space is available on major news stories

10. Dallas Morning News– Direct commenting on stories not found but site hosts a comprehensive forum space for reader comments on all stories

This is quite a positive step in the right direction.
